This is the one bit I just don't get. I haven't had a chance to think  
it through in great depth but the idea of trying to maintain a code  
base under the restriction that it run as both Elisp and CL gives me  
a serious case of the heebie jeebies. I'll try to come up with some  
more concrete comments later.
