[slim-vim] slim-vim + motif gui problems

You probably already knew this but there is an ugly work around which is far
from ideal, if you resize the window the grey area tends go away (or at
least shrink to an expected size).

Its a bit of a pain to have to split the screen and then merge it again
(getting ion to send a resize event doesn't seem to work for me, actual size
changes are required), but for long running sessions it is worth the bother.
