I too would like to wave the flag for Graphviz.  I've found it well
worthwhile learning how to get meaningful diagrams out of it, and all
the best pictures are debug output from some hairy bit of *cough*
perl.

Actually it's not too picky about node names if you quote.
Incantation included for the benefit of Graphviz newbies, along with
some style tweaks by way of minor example.
