I'm finding work on McCLIM apps or Climacs to be a rather fufilling way to
read lots of Common Lisp code,
pick some low hanging fruit, and feel generally useful.

Once you learn the basic Flexichain and buffer functions,  you gain the
ability to implement a whole bunch of useful Emacs functions and keys.
Adding commands to the buffer you are running is quite an interesting
experience. as well.
