I'm really of two minds about answering this.
The first mind tells me: let's not tamper the enthusiasm down,
and just shut up.
But the second one tells me to chime in, and challenge any one
to come up with even ONE good example of a *finished* application
done with wxWidgets (the real name), that is cross-platform, and
is polished.
In the same way that it *is* possible today to create both *polished*
and *host friendly* cross platform application with Java + Swing or SWT,
it should be possible to do the same using CL. But wxWidget's flagship
accomplishment: http://www.osafoundation.org/ 's Chanlder is *still*
appalling, after more than three years in the making.

Doing a portable GUI framework is *hard*. If I were willing to
invest any time in this, I'd rather port SWT to common-lisp, than
use wxWidget. But that's probably way too much work for the gardeners,
at least at first.
If a portable CL GUI is the problem. wxWidget is not the solution.
I believe we should defer/postpone GUI toolkits until, at least, our
first birthday :)
